TVi

Transport video interface or TVi for short.  These systems are great for a few reasons.  The first one is they can replace an existing older analog system, without new cable infrastructure.  They work with existing coaxial wire and 12 volt power.  Updating an existing system means only replacing the cameras and the DVR recording device.  This saves a lot of labor and material costs, making these an affordable upgrade solution.

Tvi systems can accommodate much longer runs than analog and the more expensive internet protocol systems or IP.  Around  3x longer cable runs than most others.  So a great choice if a long distance is needed.

These systems are typically much cheaper than a premium IP system.  A good choice with a balance of price and performance.  With performance in mind TVi cameras are typically 2 or 3 megapixels.  This is adequate resolution for most surveillance needs.  Most recently 4 and possibly 5 megapixel cameras and DVRs are coming to market.  This advancement in performance shortens the gap between other systems with a higher resolution range.

These systems are great and account for 70% of installations.  A minor down side is the cables are bulky with a RG59 coaxial cable and 2 power wires for each camera.  A large system can start to look overwhelming when all of those cables end up at the DVR.  A separate power supply is also needed to supply the necessary 12 volts.  The cables at the viewing side get split.  One set goes to the power source and the other to the DVR.

These systems are growing and evolving, but are still limited in resolution compared to a IP camera system, which can offer resolutions up to 12 megapixels.
