Z-Wave 

Z-Wave is a wireless technology used for 2-way communication and control of numerous devices and used for automation most commonly.  There are many manufacturers that make Z-wave devices.   They are readily available at most home improvement stores and all work off of the same protocols so compatibility shouldn't be an issue.

The easiest way to start with Zwave is a simple plug in module.  you simply plug it into the wall outlet and then plug your device into it.  They usually have a pass through outlet that is not controlled by Zwave.  There are two basic options the first is simply on/off control or on/off control with multi stage dimming.

Now you turn on lamps, radios, or just about anything else and have complete control over when why or how they function.
